Volunteer Teaching with the Maasai, Tanzania
Tanzania
Durations of Program: 9-12 weeks and 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 3-6 months
Dates: flexible start dates
Description:
Projects working with the Maasai are currently running in the rural village of Longido and the predominantly Maasai region of Ngaramtoni located in the foothills of Mt Meru. There are also opportunities to work with orphans and street children in the Huruma orphanage close to the bustling city of Arusha. Longido is a Maasai village, north of Arusha, with a backdrop of Mt Longido right on its doorstep. We have built our own Open Air Boma School here to help teach the Maasai adults basic English and other skills. No prior experience of teaching is necessary, and the students are highly motivated! We also help at Longido Secondary School where we have been involved in sports and science teaching. The region of Ngaramtoni is located 1 hour from Arusha, right in the foothills of Mt Meru, the second highest mountain in Tanzania. Here volunteers are working in both primary and secondary schools teaching English and giving support to local teachers who have to cope with huge class sizes. Our volunteer posts are community based and provide a unique opportunity for visitors to participate in the local culture, gaining a better understanding of the values held by the peoples of this lovely region. Amber Fletcher, from USA (Sambasha School) - 'Although I know I helped my students by teaching them some English skills, I learned much, much more. Being immersed in an entirely new culture is a great opportunity to learn more about yourself. I appreciated the strong sense of community amongst Mondo Volunteers.'
