Description:
People of many ages love to play the sport of soccer/football! Here you can coach and play your way through this exciting and unique project. You'll coach junior boys and girls teams, as well as training and possibly playing for the senior men's or women's teams at the club. Football is Australia's fastest growing sport. Since the Socceroos success at the 2006 football World Cup, football is Australia's largest participation sport. Playing soccer in the warmth of the Australian sun with Aussies...what could be better?! If you do any placement in Perth, an Indigenous Heritage Tour in Kings Park, Perth's No. 1 tourist attraction, is included in your itinerary, free of charge. PROJECT OVERVIEW You'll work with a football club in the beautiful city of Perth, coaching the boys and girls junior teams in the afternoons. In the evenings you'll be able to train with the adults' teams and possibly even play with the teams on the weekends, if you get selected. On this project we work with a number of football clubs, so if you play at a semi professional standard, you'll have the opportunity to play for a semi professional team. If you are a social player, you'll be able to play social football at one of the clubs. As the main football project won't occupy all your time, during the daytime you'll work on the Refugee Sports Project. Here you can coach football and/or a number of other sports for around 4-5 hours every day, leaving your evenings free to coach and train with the cricket team. WORK CONTENT 1. YOUR WORK AT THE CLUB The Football Project: You'll work at a football club located close to the city centre of Perth. The clubs we work with have a large number of boys and girls junior teams which you will coach, as well as a large number of male and female teams. You'll also have the opportunity to coach, train with and possibly play for these teams, if you get selected. You'll work with a number of male and female junior teams at the clubs, and these teams fall into the following categories: --> 6-8 year old teams (Rooball Soccer, as they call it in Australia) --> Under 8s under 16s (a mixture of males and female teams) --> Under 18s If you'd like to also play football on this project, you can do this with a number of senior teams. There is a good mixture of standards at the clubs so there is something for everyone. You could also coach one of the senior teams, if you'd like to. If you'd like the opportunity to coach the semi professional team, you must be an FA Level 2 Coach, or the equivalent. If you're a good football player, you'll have the opportunity to trial with a semi professional team. Here are the senior teams: --> Under 23s --> Amateur male and female teams --> Semi-professional team (males) --> Senior team 45+ (male) The clubs you will be working at have a great social scene and your club will welcome you with open arms. Games take place on weekends during the season. The juniors play in the mornings - this is when you'll have the opportunity to coach a team, putting everything you have taught them into practice on the field. In the afternoons, as a senior player, it will be your opportunity to play. 2. YOUR PROJECT AT THE REFUGEE CENTRE: The Refugee Sports Project will take place during the day. For this element of your programme, you will be working at a school located in Perth. The school you will be working with have an Intensive English Centre (IEC) which has children from war-torn countries such as Sudan, Somalia and Afghanistan who have come to Australia as refugees with the United Nations. The IEC was set up to enable children on the program to learn English and enable them to adapt to the Australian education system before moving into main stream schooling. As part of the IEC program, the children learn to play sports at the school. As a volunteer on this project, you will be coaching a number of sports to the IEC children as well as main stream children at the school. Coaching takes place for around 4-5 hours a day. The schools have good sports facilities and you'll work as an assistant to the current sports teacher. This project is very beneficial to the IEC children because, through sports, you can improve their English skills as well as teaching them new sports. Many of the IEC children are very talented at sports and with your help they will get the opportunity to improve their skills and sporting abilities. There are a wide number of sports available to coach on this project and you will be involved in a wide range of sporting activities, giving you great diversity on the project. The sports are generally coached by season, but if you wanted to coach a sport that was not in season, or if you wanted to introduce a new sport to the children, the school would welcome it as long as it was of benefit to the children. The sports are as follows: Term 1: Volleyball, Basketball & Tennis Term 2: Aussie Rules, Soccer, Netball & Basketball Term 3: AFL (Aussie Rules Football), baseball, Netball, Soccer, Cross Country Term 4: Tennis, Swimming, Volleyball, Cricket & Soccer This element of the project runs during the school terms. The school terms for 2010 are as follows: Term 1: 2nd Feb - 9th April Term 2: 28th April - 3rd July Term 3: 20th July - 25th September Term 4: 12th October - 17th December The lessons you will be coaching in will last for 40 minutes and the school day runs from around 8:45 - 2:45 pm. As a volunteer you will be assisting the existing sports teacher at the school coaching the children. You'll spend about 4 to 5 hours a day helping the children at the school. FREE COACHING MANUALS: As a volunteer sports coach with Travellers, you have access to a large number of coaching manuals for each sport - these manuals have been produced in-house by our Sports Manager. These manuals are very useful and will help you to plan coaching sessions for your students.
