This is a chance to share your passion for sports, cricket and others, with children you have a strong desire to learn! Some of the children are refugees and need as many positive role models in their life as possible to help give them self-confidence! You'll coach the junior teams at the club, then train with and possibly play for one of the teams at the club. If you're an excellent player or you just play for fun, this club has got everything! Cricket is one of Australia's biggest sports. They are the current World Champions and the best team in the world. If you do any placement in Perth, an Indigenous Heritage Tour in Kings Park, Perth's No. 1 tourist attraction, is included in your itinerary, free of charge. PROJECT OVERVIEW On this project you'll be able to work at one of the top cricket clubs in Western Australia, coaching the juniors in the afternoons and evenings, as well as training and possibly playing for one of the many male or female teams at the club.If you're an excellent player, you may be able to play at the highest levels in WA. If you're just a social player, you'll still be allocated to a team. The club we work with has a very lively social scene and you will be welcomed with open arms.As the main cricket project won't occupy all your time, during the daytime you'll work on the Refugee Sports Project. Here you can coach cricket or a number of other sports for around 4-5 hours every day, leaving your evenings free to coach and train with the cricket team. WORK CONTENT 1. YOUR PROJECT AT THE CLUB You'll work at a cricket club located on the beautiful Swan River, overlooking the skyline of Perth. The club has had players such as Dennis Lillie, Marcus Trescothick and Ben Hollioke. The club is also very conveniently located close to your accommodation. There are excellent facilities and you'll coach the boys and girls junior teams. You'll also have the opportunity to coach, train, and possibly play for the senior men's and women's teams, if you get selected. The junior teams at the clubs fall under the following age groups: --> Under 9s --> Under 10s --> Under 12s Under 17s If you also like to play cricket on this project, you can do this with a number of senior teams. There is a good mixture of standards at the clubs so there is something for everyone. As well as training and playing for one of these teams, you may also be able to coach them if you're considered good enough. There are a number of senior teams that you can train with and play for: --> 4 senior men's teams --> 2 senior women's teams --> 8 social men's teams 2. YOUR PROJECT AT THE REFUGEE CENTRE: The Refugee Sports Project will take place during the day. For this element of your programme, you will be working at a school located in Perth. The school you will be working with have an Intensive English Centre (IEC) which has children from war-torn countries such as Sudan, Somalia and Afghanistan who have come to Australia as refugees with the United Nations. The IEC was set up to enable children on the program to learn English and enable them to adapt to the Australian education system before moving into main stream schooling. As part of the IEC program, the children learn to play sports at the school. As a volunteer on this project, you will be coaching a number of sports to the IEC children as well as main stream children at the school. Coaching takes place for around 4-5 hours a day. The schools have good sports facilities and you'll work as an assistant to the current sports teacher. This project is very beneficial to the IEC children because, through sports, you can improve their English skills as well as teaching them new sports. Many of the IEC children are very talented at sports and with your help they will get the opportunity to improve their skills and sporting abilities. There are a wide number of sports available to coach on this project and you will be involved in a wide range of sporting activities, giving you great diversity on the project. The sports are generally coached by season, but if you wanted to coach a sport that was not in season, or if you wanted to introduce a new sport to the children, the school would welcome it as long as it was of benefit to the children. The sports are as follows: Term 1: Volleyball, Basketball & Tennis Term 2: Aussie Rules, Soccer, Netball & Basketball Term 3: AFL (Aussie Rules Football), baseball, Netball, Soccer, Cross Country Term 4: Tennis, Swimming, Volleyball, Cricket & Soccer This element of the project runs during the school terms.
