Capacity Building in Lobbying for Community Access to Portable Water
Cameroon
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months, 7-12 months, 1-2 years and over 2 years
Typical Duration of Program: 3-6 months
Dates: From 15/11/09 to 15/11/2011
Description:
This position has to do with Sensitizing communities on their rights to portable water; teaching them how to treat, obtain and efficiently use water; building their capacities in the lobbying for access to portable water and identification/protection of water sources. Volunteers will therefore be working in communities that have water problems and will be teaching them amongst others, rain water harvesting and water treatment techniques aimed at solving the water problems we are facing in many communities.
Highlights:
Women, young girls and children are the main target here because they are the ones mostly responsible for provision of water in homes. All that the volunteers need to do is have one or two of these communities with which to work and apply the scheme we already have prepared for the specific problems facing that community. This does not however mean that the volunteer is not to use his or her own initiative/experience. We will very much welcome new techniques and methods for tackling these problems but in a case where we find out that a volunteer is not well equipped with required resources we will be glad to put them on the rails.
Qualifications:
There is no need for any particular qualification as we have material already prepared which the volunteer would be using for the campaign. However, a BSC in environmental science would be great. But what we need in the first place is the willingness to serve local communities and families. If you have good communication skills then this is a good one for you. Volunteers should be able to express themselves in either English of French. So, any one who feels like doing something to help our communities get access to portable water is welcome.
