Community Projects in Australia
Australia
Duration of Program: 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 3-6 months
Dates: January and July
Description:
There is a broad range of placements in Australia, spanning all states and territories; each with a wealth of opportunities. The work types available to volunteers are: - Community and Caring, - Teaching, - Environment and - Outdoor Education
Highlights:
Schools projects are in both day and boarding schools across Australia where your work would involve boarding house duties, assisting with sports coaching, excursions, camps, music or outdoor education activities. Alternatively there are a number of schools with predominantly Aboriginal students in Northern Australia. You will provide pastoral support to children living away from their traditional support networks. You will help teach English (as for many it is their second or third language) as well as get involved in boarding house duties, administration, sport, music and drama. Our conservation projects are with our partner organization, Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA). Work includes maintaining national parks, weeding, path building, surveying flora and fauna and monitoring local wildlife. Imagine working in the Australian outback, hours from the nearest city. You are a member of a team of ten volunteers, planting trees in the desert. Last week you were cleaning up after bushfire that ravaged Canberra and in several weeks' time you will be building bush tracks through one of the national parks. Lattitudes environmental placements can give you the real Australian outback experience! YMCA camps provide outdoor education and recreation programmes for organized groups. The camps are based in stunning locations either in the mountain ranges or by the coast. The camps require prior experience or interest in outdoor activities and working with children. The Outdoor Education Group camps are set up for educational purposes so volunteers can expect to learn a lot about the landscape, aboriginal culture etc and help in regeneration projects. They will also act as support to instructors in running activities like hiking, canoeing, rafting, abseiling, river sledding and mountain biking.
