Environmental conservation and awareness activities for the people of Mombasa
Kenya
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: December 2 - December 23, 2010
Description:
The international volunteers will work together to help the efforts of a local environmental youth group called Magongo Santana Friends. The group is involved in promoting environmental issues. They spread awareness across the community on issues such as waste management and HIV/AIDS. However, the group is in need of support in terms of organizational development and technical expertise. Volunteers who can train the group specifically in the areas of music production, drama, and marketing their painting and drawings are needed. Orientation will be conducted for the volunteers to understand the objectives and expectations of the program. Volunteers will be involved in environmental conservation, which involves several activities such as garbage collection, clean up, and tree planting. The project will explore the theme of how environmental conservation efforts can be portrayed in different forms of art. The volunteers will also take part in fundraising, as well as HIV/AIDS and sanitation outreach programs for the local community. The group will work 5 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. Saturday and Sundays are free. There will also be cultural presentations where all the volunteers will have an opportunity to present their countries and cultures. Volunteers will be free to choose presentation methods like story telling, singing, dancing, drama, or speech.
Highlights:
The project offers ample opportunity for valuable cultural exchange. Aside from being introduced to Kenyan culture and community, the volunteers will have an opportunity to present their countries and cultures.
