Teach English on a Tropical Island in Thailand - Koh Samui
Thailand
- Other Cities in Thailand:
Koh Samui
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Description:
Not all tropical islands are the same even if the beaches are all great, but don't worry because we've got a range of options for those who like to teach then hit the beach, with the Gulf of Thailand providing something for everyone's taste. Koh Samui is a legendary haven for backpackers and has developed plenty of creature comforts to keep you occupied when the bell goes, from a vibrant nightlife, lovely restaurants to the obligatory stunning beaches. As long as you've brought your sun cream, sandals and our TEFL certification (which is included in the price) you've got all you need to enjoy the island and help the children improve their English. Project details: You will be teaching at one of the Primary Schools in Bophut on the north side of Koh Samui Island. These are state schools that cater for approximately 250 students aged from 6 to 12. They are currently taught some English by a teacher that speaks limited English and the school needs help from English speaking volunteers to improve the level across the school. The schools also hope that volunteers will be keen to become involved in other areas of the school such as; sports and art etc. Why the project needs volunteers: Thailand has a proud history of never having been colonised by the West and as a result has maintained her own distinct language, culture and tradition. The government did not focus on English language in the past but has recently acknowledged its value in terms of international development. Many schools are keen to employ native English speakers but can not afford to employ good paid staff. In many schools children do not actually get the chance to practise day to day conversation and the schools in Koh Samui are really looking forward to volunteers bringing native English lessons to the classroom. Volunteers will need to focus on basic conversational English, which means helping students to speak simple English. By teaching young people English you will be able to make a positive impact on their lives and make more opportunities available to them, particularly as tourism is a growing industry on the island.

You also need to be prepared to help out with a range of activities. Your role as a volunteer: You will be teaching basic conversational English and helping the other English teachers.
