Teach English in Sri Lanka!

  Sri Lanka
    Colombo Central,  Kandy

Length of Position: 8-12 Weeks
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Multiple start dates throughout the year

Description: Be part of it with i-to-i!
Our goal is to achieve 400yrs of combined volunteering all over the world by the end of 2008

So far we have achieved 325yrs which when broken down means we achieved the following:

- Over 5500 children cared for on our community projects around the world
- A minimum of 13,000 children and adults taught English in schools and community centres
- Hundreds of animals protected including Turtles, Pandas, Elephants, Monkeys and more
- At least 80 homes and structures built for families and communities in need
- More than 8000 trees planted which are enough trees to offset the CO2 emissions of over 2,000 cars

Want to see why small is beautiful?

You can do more than just teach English on this project; you can be a sports coach, actor, entertainer and a friend too as you become fully immersed in community life. The great thing about staying on an island is that it is usually small enough to be explored (and you won't get too lost if you lose your way). The project is based in Colombo which not only provides a great backdrop to your time here but is also a handy place from which to explore the rest of the island. Children on the project range from 7 to 18 and will all be eager to make the most of having a native English speaker around! Having you there will mean they can develop knowledge of the language through more varied means such as conversation classes, games and songs.

Teach English in Sri Lanka!

Highlights: What were the highlights of your trip that you couldn't wait to tell your friends about?

"Playing cricket on hot sunny afternoons with the boys. Teacher/pupil volleyball match - the female teachers were playing in saris: I never knew they afforded such mobility! Seeing the pupils' artwork and creativity. In limited circumstances with few provisions, they were able to make amazing things: paper flowers, model cars, bamboo huts.. The poisonous snake in the garden, the giant spider on my pillow, the wasps nest in my bedroom... What doesn't kill/bite/sting you, scares the life out of you, but makes you a stronger person!" (Rena Patel)
