Croatia
Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: Programs depart regularly throughout the year
Description:
Protect Endangered Bears Help provide refuge for the highly endangered brown bear population in Croatia. Maintain their habitat, protect and care for them under the guidance of local host organizations. International Student Volunteers (a non-profit organization) offers you the chance to provide and care Croatia's much loved, yet endangered brown bears. After volunteering at their habitat enclosure for two weeks and educating locals on the danger these great animals face, reward yourself by exploring Eastern Europe's gorgeous medieval settings. Following your project, ISV will take you on an adventure tour throughout Eastern Europe where you go hydro-speeding, kayaking, caving and canyoning, not to mention spending seven full days and six nights on our own personal ISV yacht, island hoping in the Adriatic Sea. What a way to spend your summer! About ISVs Brown Bear Conservation Projects Projects: Croatia's much beloved brown bears are under threat from hunting and increasing human occupation of their natural habitat. Here is your chance to volunteer and provide refuge for the endangered brown bear in a relatively natural setting. Primary tasks vary and can include building and maintaining animal enclosures, fence building, vegetation removal, tree planting, surveying, and animal husbandry (daily care for animals). All of these tasks are directly related to the establishment or maintenance of the sanctuary and the promotion of animal conservation. Other projects in Eastern Europe: children's education, orphanage projects, orphan brown bear conservation, community construction. Adventure Tour You will travel through the mountains of the Slovenian Alps before hitting the rolling plains of northern Croatia and heading south towards the Dalmatian Coast, its Mediterranean islands and a seven-day sailing adventure! You will explore World Heritage Sites such as Plitvice Lakes National Park, a magical world of lakes and waterfalls, Diocletians Palace, built in 295 AD, and the fortified Old Towns of Dubrovnik and Trogir. In addition, you will experience alpine environments with wild rivers and lush forests, medieval style towns with cobbled stone streets, quaint rural villages, idyllic beaches and the vibrant city culture of Ljubljana, Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik. You will have the opportunity to participate on activities such as: - Mountain biking around Lake Bled and Bovec - Hydrospeeding on the Soca River - Caving in underground karstic systems - Discovering the historic Old Towns of Zagreb and Dubrovnik - Visiting a world of cascades and waterfalls at Plitvice Lakes National Park - A two-day kayaking adventure on the Zrmanja River - A seven-day island hopping adventure on a chartered boat - Rock climbing on limestone cliffs around Omis - Canyoning in the Cetina River gorge - Exploring and swimming in the national park on Mljet Island - Enjoying local cuisine cooked the traditional way
