Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: open
Description:
uVolunteer works with an animal rescue foundation in Thailand that specializes in saving gibbons. The animal rescue foundation works with white-handed gibbons (Hylobates Lar), the most widespread of the four species of gibbon found in Thailand. Through our educational program we aim to reduce poaching and deforestation, to gain support for our project and for the conservation movement in Thailand. This foundation currently houses over seventy gibbons, an effective resource for teaching the local community and foreign tourists, and it attracts international students who wish to study gibbons. If humans are living in the area, a consultation and education process is vital. Planning is from the ground up and involves the employment of local people who act as educators and 'gibbon guardians'. You will work under the supervision of staff at the project site assisting in the maintenance and care of the facilities and Gibbons. You will help in all aspects of animal conservation and rehabilitation from cleaning and feeding to releasing and researching the gibbons. You will receive a week of training at the start of the program. Your duties may include: - Assisting the Animal Keepers (preparing food, feeding etc). - Assisting with behavioral research. - Building cages. - Daily cleaning of cages. - Informing and educating tourists on the current situation of wildlife protection in Thailand. - Teaching in your native language
Highlights:
The rehabilitation site is in Khao Pra Theaw near the Bang Pae Waterfall in Phuket, Thailand. It is about 9 km east from the Heroines Monument. Although Phuket is one of the most highly developed provinces with a lot of Western influences, the site is in the northern, less developed part of the island, and the village of Bang Rong is almost entirely Muslim and relatively traditional. uVolunteer anticipates and encourages your desire for travel and adventure. Your time away from volunteering is open for you to decide your activities. You may decide to take advantage of the local culture and spend time within the community over the weekend. Otherwise, there is ample opportunity to explore Thailand and all it has to offer. Great weekend trips include: * Diving and snorkeling * Trekking in national parks * Boat trips to nearby Islands * Waterfall visits * Elephant Trekking * Cable Waterskiing * Beaches and sunbathing * Bars and Discos * Jet Skiing * Bungee Jumping * Bowling * Go-Kart Racing
