Volunteer Vacation in Cape Town, South Africa
South Africa
- Cape Town:
Cape Town (Kaapstad)
Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: Visit our website for upcoming start dates
Description:
This 2 week volunteer vacation involves teaching children basic literacy and numeracy at township schools. Volunteers will assist teachers in the understaffed township school in Nomzamo. The students will learn basic conversational English through the use of educational reinforcement programs. As many of the teachers are not fluent English speakers themselves the volunteers will be invaluable help in these overcrowded schools. Included in this volunteer vacation are tours to all the hot spots in Cape Town including a big 5 safari experience, wine tasting in Stellenbosch, a visit to Robben Island and to see the penguins of Cape Point. How this program makes a difference: One of the biggest challenges schools in townships throughout South Africa have to face is overcrowding. Many teachers have the added challenge that English is not their first language which means that they are unable to give children the preparation they require, to develop the basic English and literacy skills they require. Once children reach primary school many of the lessons are taught in English which means that children who do not have a basic understanding of the language will fall behind the rest of their peers.
