Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: open

Description: The Penitentiary Center of Granada was founded in 1980 with the vision that prisons should be a place of rehabilitation, and that efforts should be made to eventually reintegrate prisoners back into society. The Penitentiary Center holds 450 to 500 inmates, 20 percent of the prisoners are women and adolescents. You will be working with the staff and inmates of the penitentiary. Your duties will vary based on your own personal skills and ideas. Your time spent in The Penitentiary Center of Granada will help you to foster important relationships with the inmates and the staff. Through these relationships you will make a difference in their lives, as well as gain important cultural insight that you would never achieve as a tourist.

Volunteer Nicaragua: Penitentary Program

Highlights: The Penitentiary Center is located in Granada. Granada is the oldest colonial city founded in Central America. It is the oldest and most important city in the region. Along the narrow streets of this colonial city and outside its urban limits, there is plenty to explore. uVolunteer anticipates and encourages your desire for travel and adventure. Your time away from volunteering is open for you to decide your activities. You may decide to take advantage of the local culture and spend time within the community over the weekend. Otherwise, there is ample opportunity to explore Nicaragua and all it has to offer.

Great weekend trips include:
* Visit historical monuments in the colonial city of Granada
* Set up an excursion to visit one of the many factories that produce cigars, sweets and traditional golosinas
* Visit museums, local exhibitions or music venues
