Volunteer Kenya: AIDS and HIV Program
Kenya
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: open
Description:
Kenya has voluntary testing centers which are based in 3 local towns. In these centers everyone can receive a free HIV test and counseling. Because the services are free, a large amount of people are turning up and there isn't enough staff to accommodate these patients. Volunteers are placed here to help staff do testing and create awareness of HIV/AIDS. Volunteers will also be involved in counseling HIV positive people and helping with administrative work. You will work alongside other volunteers and health care professionals aiding in all aspects of education, awareness, and testing of diseases and HIV/AIDS. You will aid in all aspects of education and awareness of HIV and AIDS through testing, counseling, administrative duties, and lectures.
Highlights:
You will be placed in one of the 3 local towns with the testing centers: * Nairobi is the capital and the largest and fastest growing city in Kenya. The city is located on the Nairobi River and population between three and four million. * Nakuru is the fourth largest urban area in Kenya. The city is located between Lake Nakuru National Park and the Menengai Crater and has around 300,000 inhabitants. * Nyeri is about 150 km (a two hour drive) north of the capital, Nairobi. The city is located in the fertile Central Highlands. uVolunteer believes that you should have a well balanced work and play schedule. This means you will only be required to work 5 days per week (Monday to Friday) for a maximum of 6 hours per day. For the remainder of your time, you will be free to enjoy the vacationing aspects of your trip. uVolunteer anticipates and encourages your desire for travel and adventure. Your time away from volunteering is open for you to decide your activities. You may decide to take advantage of the local culture and spend time within the community over the weekend. Otherwise, there is ample opportunity to explore Kenya and all it has to offer. Our local representative, will advice you on which areas are safe for travel.
