Description:
This community volunteer project in South Africa is a recuperative hospital for under priviledged children, usually aged between four and twelve years but it also accepts younger infants and occasionally babies. It is the only hospital of its type in the Western Cape and it was originally opened in the mid 1960's. The mission of the hospital is to provide expert nursing and medical care in a homely and loving environment for infants and children recovering from acute medical conditions and surgery. They are referred by major hospitals and are, for social or medical reasons, unable to return to their own homes. Moving them to this hospital frees up valuable beds in the referring hospitals for children needing surgery or other specialist treatment.
Highlights:
This Community volunteer programme in South Africa receives limited support from the State. The hospital has to find its own funds for everything else. Having volunteers increases the staff to patient ratio. You will be assisting with the day to day care of the children. Not only medical care and love and attention but also with art projects, English lessons, and games to keep the children occupied and happy. Expect to volunteer from Monday to Friday approximately 6 - 7 hours a day. Other international volunteers may also be participating on this community volunteer programme and living in the area. Your evenings will be free for you to enjoy the company of other volunteers and if you choose, to enjoy the restaurants and nightlife of Cape Town.
