Even though progression has been made by Indian women in the higher segments of the more affluent sections of Indian society, The conditions for the vast majority of Indian woman is deplorable. Women empowerment in India volunteer programme turns out to be a great help to assist women in need. In spite of increased school enrolment and higher literacy levels amongst Indian women, a conservative and male dominated society has repressed development and empowerment. There are groups that have been identified as in need of support: * Slum dwelling or daily labouring women and adolescent girls deprived of any literacy, health awareness or vocational skills * Victims of domestic violence * Orphaned adolescent girls that are vulnerable due to societal norms * Women's self help groups Volunteering in India taking part in this Women Empowerment project will give you the chance to make a difference in Indian society.
Highlights:
Volunteers in the women's projects will be helping disadvantaged women being sheltered by the organisations. On a daily basis volunteers will be interacting with the women allowing them to connect on a personal level and try and have a positive effect on their lives. This regular interaction develops an understanding of the plight that these women have to go through. Women Empowerment volunteers will partake in the following activities on a day to day basis: * Teaching conversational English, computer and general arithmetic for their day to day use * Family visits of women or adolescent girls to raise awareness * Care and preparation of case studies for women that have been victims of domestic violence or abandonment by their families * Morale boosting of women through fun activities, creative workshops or vocational training. * Imparting basic life skills especially for orphaned adolescents * Taking part in rallies, poster preparation and flyer distribution related to various women's issues * Female volunteers will be immensely helpful in imparting knowledge of family planning and sexual health as these issues are considered taboo in conservative Indian society. * Help create awareness amongst women about their rights against excesses and issues like the dowry problem, alcoholism, domestic violence and dangers of HIV/AIDS etc.
Qualifications:
* You do not need any formal training or experience to participate but whatever experience you do have will be taken into account when arranging your day-to-day activities. * Volunteers need to be independent, enthusiastic, adaptable and hard working with an open-minded attitude.
