Homestay Language Assistant China

  China
  • Shanghai:
  • Shanghai

Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Any Monday throughout the year

Description: A chance to live and experience one of the World's most exciting cities in one of the oldest countries in the world. The Chinese call China Zhong Guo (pronounced Jong Gwo), the Middle Kingdom, and are inherently proud of their five thousand years of culture and history.

You will live with a Chinese Host family in or near to central Shanghai where you will be expected to give the family members, normally the children, English lessons for a total of ten hours per week. You will be made very welcome by the family and in a sense will be 'adopted', whatever your age and will have the chance to experience real life in this fascinating country.

Homestay Language Assistant China

Highlights: Upon arrival at Shanghai Pudong airport you will be met by a Twin volunteer liaison officer who will take you to your hosts, introduce you to your new family and settle you in. The next day you will start your four-day induction at our office in Shanghai. This will include beginner's Mandarin lessons, tours and cultural training, a SIM card for your mobile, a travel card and travel training. We are happy to leave it as a private arrangement between you and your host family which times you choose to teach them.

Normally families will expect you to give lessons early evening, before dinner but this is not a rule, just a guide. The rest of the time is your own. Shanghai is an enormous city with plenty to do and see for the tourist but if you are interested in working during your stay we can assist with interviews for part time teaching and market research positions or you can undertake Chinese lessons at any level.

This programme is especially useful to people learning Mandarin already or eager to start as there is no better way of getting to grips with a language than living with a native family and experiencing the country first hand. However, if you do not speak any Mandarin our volunteer liaison is only a phone call away if you find you need any help.
