Description:
Quality, affordable healthcare is not accessible for a significant number of Guatemalans. There is a severe shortage of doctors and hospitals as well. The major causes of death in Guatemala are treatable and preventable in more developed countries, diseases and conditions such as heart disease, bronchitis, and influenza. Trained and licensed healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, midwives) are needed to help tend to the community's healthcare needs. AMPED medical volunteers may have the opportunity to engage in the following: * Observe and work on medical cases; and * Provide preventive health education; NOTE: Work responsibilities are assigned at the project director's discretion based on his or her assessment of your skill level and ability, as well as demonstrated initiative.
Highlights:
Authentic cultural immersion experience as participants live with a local host family in addition to having daily interaction with the locals in the community and their project site. Participants receive 2 hours of FREE Spanish Monday-Friday for the duration of their stay, up to 120 hours.
Qualifications:
Must be a trained and licensed healthcare professional and have an intermediate Spanish level. Documentation of medical credentials and career vitae must be provided prior to arrival

Cost Include Description:
Includes project set-up arrangements, meals and accommodations in Xela, orientation, and 24/7 emergency in-country staff support.Participants will also receive information regarding their placement prior to their departure. Placement information, will include in-country contact information, alternative accommodations for delayed arrivals, currency exchange, phone and internet communication, laundry, etc.

Typical Volunteer: While participation is not limited to this demographic, the average age is 18-26. Participants that are flexible and open minded when it comes to cultural differences, ways of life, and work pace are those that tend to benefit most from their experience abroad, as do those that demonstrate initiative with regard to recommending and implementing changes to improve the project and to assist the staff.
