Description:
The safety and longevity of a community rests on the degree to which it is informed about impending health threats. For this reason, public health initiatives are key to disease prevention. These efforts are especially important in countries where quality healthcare is not widely accessible. AMPED's public health project in Argentina has been in existence since the early 1990's. A mixed team of professionals and volunteers is responsible for executing campaigns to promote healthy choices and lifestyles among targeted groups as well as the general population. HIV/AIDS prevention and substance abuse are major areas of focus. Volunteers' responsibilities may include: * Technical Support: special event planning, relationship building, database construction, data processing, conducting training workshops, coordinating with other agencies to develop preventive health campaigns; * Research issues related to awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS and identify resources (financial and educational) for conducting health screenings and awareness campaigns; and * Targeted outreach and intervention through the use of tools and strategies designed to effectively reach sub-populations that are susceptible to HIV/AIDS.

Typical Volunteer: While participation is not limited to this demographic, the average age is 18-26. Program placements are in Cordoba, Argentina, which is a college town. Because Argentina tends to be known for its cultural sophistication, participants tend to be on the higher end of the age range. Participants that are flexible and open minded when it comes to cultural differences, ways of life, and work pace are those that tend to benefit most from their experience abroad, as do those that demonstrate initiative with regard to recommending and implementing changes to improve the project and to assist the staff.
