Description: The safety and longevity of a community rests on the degree to which it is informed about impending health threats. For this reason, public health initiatives are key to disease prevention. These efforts are especially important in countries where quality healthcare is not widely accessible.

AMPED's public health project in Argentina has been in existence since the early 1990's. A mixed team of professionals and volunteers is responsible for executing campaigns to promote healthy choices and lifestyles among targeted groups as well as the general population. HIV/AIDS prevention and substance abuse are major areas of focus.

Volunteers' responsibilities may include:

* Technical Support: special event planning, relationship building, database construction, data processing, conducting training workshops, coordinating with other agencies to develop preventive health campaigns;
* Research issues related to awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS and identify resources (financial and educational) for conducting health screenings and awareness campaigns; and
* Targeted outreach and intervention through the use of tools and strategies designed to effectively reach sub-populations that are susceptible to HIV/AIDS.
