Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks and 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: Throughout the Year
Description:
There are a number of rural schools in this area that are seriously under-funded and do not have the resources or sufficient teachers for the huge number of children who attend each school. These schools really need your support as a volunteer teacher, and you can make a difference to the education of hundreds of children! - Volunteer Role - As a volunteer on this project you will work in either one or both of the local schools - where you will be teaching core subjects to children of all different ages and levels. There will be local members of staff in the class with you; the class size is normally up to 150 students. It is advisable that the class is split between you and your fellow volunteers, so there is the opportunity for closer one-to-one interaction. You will be able to teach subjects such as: * English * Mathematics * Sciences, Chemistry, Biology and Physics * Arts * Sports and Games * Health care education and HIV / AIDS awareness * Extra-curricular activities From around 2:00 pm to about 5:00 pm, you can get completely involved in teaching and playing sports with the children. Each school offers a variety of sports, but the most popular sport by far is football (soccer) and netball (played by lots of girls); most schools will have a team for each. Sports such as volleyball, rounders, and badminton are also offered (but only informally, due to lack of equipment and knowledge of the sport). Both of the schools run informal groups or projects on HIV / AIDS awareness and sexual education, but these need some further development through the assistance of volunteers. Students need a bit of help expressing their views through debating and forums and you can also provide them with educational materials. Fun educational activities such as making posters, writing poems, performing plays and songs can also be used to help raise awareness and understanding of HIV / AIDS at the school and within community.
Highlights:
Most of our coordinators run local level organizations and work hard to address local issues affecting the life of their communities. In addition to our international coordinators, we work directly with local schools, orphanages, development agencies, and community organizations. We strive to ensure each program meets the high standards of quality as expected and deserved by our volunteers.
