Medical/Paramedic Center in Atenas, Costa Rica

Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks and 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Flexible. Please arrive in Costa Rica on a Sunday through Thursday.

Description: This medical center responds to medical and traumatic emergencies in this area of Costa Rica 24 hours/day, 7 day a week. The goal of this center is to provide quality health care. The medical professionals stabilize patients and, if necessary, transport them to the hospital. Volunteers can work with the paramedics in the ambulances or with the doctors in their practice, or both if they have the abilities.

Highlights: Volunteer activities may include:
- Attending emergencies
- Accompanying paramedics in the ambulances to the place where the help is needed
- Assisting the doctors with patients including: putting bandages, applying medicine and similar tasks
- Helping keep the medical facility clean
- Depending on the experience and education of the volunteers, they may help the doctors with more advance procedures, including injections
- And other tasks that may be needed at the center

Qualifications:
All volunteers must be 18 years old or older. Volunteers need to have a desire to learn about another culture and teach about theirs. All interested participants must complete a GeoVisions application.
