Reconstruction and Building of Schools in Nepal

  Nepal
  • Kathmandu:
  • Kathmandu

Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Throughout the Year

Description: You will be getting involved in building and maintaining a school near the amazing Chitwan National Park in Nepal. See the smiles on the children's faces as they watch you improve their school knowing that they will have a better environment for learning. After your hard work experience all that the famous Chitwan National Park has to offer, maybe even enjoy en elephant ride or see how many endangered species you can spot.

*What the project does and why does it need you!
This project was established to improve the environment at schools by developing their basic infrastructure. Although the schools are supported by the government, the government is not able to help maintain or improve the structure of the schools. The work of the volunteers is therefore vital to improve the schools to give the children a better learning environment.

*What you'll be doing
You will be getting involved in various activities including plastering classroom walls, ground leveling, classroom decorating, toilet construction, helping improve the water supply, gardening, assisting in fixing doors and windows among other things! You may also be involved in extra activities such as playing sports with the children and a local cultural program - you'll certainly be in demand from the locals wanting to know all about your home country! If you have any interests or hobbies that you would like to share then please try and put together a session for their popular cultural evening - in the past there has been jewelry making, hair braiding, sports etc! You may also be involved in helping teach English to the local community. Be prepared for some hard work and some fun times!

You will be working Monday to Friday 09.30 am to 5pm but there is the option to work 6 days if so desired. Don't forget the cultural evenings too!

*Where you'll be staying
You will be staying in local homestay accommodation around 15 minutes walk to the project. Accommodation will be basic and clean and usually in shared rooms (maximum of two people to a room). Toilets are Nepali style and you will be sharing a bathroom with the host family, there are no showers but a bath will be available. Basic but a great way to live like a local!

*What you'll be eating
Meals are provided. Breakfast will be tea or milk with snacks or biscuits, lunch and dinner will be local Nepali food such as rice, dhal, curry and pickles.

*Advice and what to bring
You will need to bring clothes that you do not mind getting dirty, dark colored clothes would be more suitable and also some working gloves. Please remember that revealing clothes and bare chests (!) are not suitable, t shirts are fine however.

*When you arrive
If you arrive on one of the designated arrival dates then airport pick-up is completely free. Please book your flight to arrive into Tribuvhan International airport (airport code KTM). Should you require a different pick-up time or any additional nights at the orientation accommodation, for example if you arrive a day or two early, you can arrange this through the i-to-i office. Your orientation meeting will take place over the next 2 days in Kathmandu before transferring to your homestay accommodation located near to the project. Transfer time will be approximately 4 to 5 hours by bus to the project. A days orientation will also take place at the project. A return transfer is included back to the airport.
