Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks and 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Description:
Since shark populations are diminishing around the world, this program's objective is to obtain data about shark landings in an artisanal fishery port. Collecting this information is very useful towards a population assessment of sharks and rays in Ecuador's coastal waters. Artisanal fishery ports must be visited everyday in order to learn how to identify sharks and how to obtain different types of data. In addition, going out with the fisherman has the same importance for understanding local fishing activities. The objective is to understand where, how and what are the local residents are fishing. Currently, such fishing information is very limited for Ecuador's coastal waters, which makes shark conservation very difficult. Volunteers will join the crews of these small local vessels, and will be equipped with a GPS, Cell phone, VHF radio, waterproof clothes, and many data sheets. A permanent supervisor will coordinate this activity at all times.
