Durations of Program: 7-12 months and 1-2 years
Typical Duration of Program: 7-12 months
Dates: January - November 2010
Description:
Every ArtCorps artist works directly with a local non-governmental organization that is an expert in its field. Artists strengthen dialogue between community members and the organization, improve community education and empower local leadership. Artists will: * Work as a volunteer and live in his or her host community from January 2010 through December 2010. Artists have the option to extend their stay for a second year if agreed upon by the host organization. * Receive airfare, room and board, medical insurance and a small personal stipend. * Receive training and technical assistance from ArtCorps staff in the region in order to integrate ArtCorps methodology into the host organization. * Uphold the mission and values of ArtCorps as the sole ArtCorps artist in the host community. * Communicate fluently in Spanish.
Highlights:
Past ArtCorps artists are saying: "Only now have I had the opportunity to integrate these important cultural beliefs into my work... I feel like my work has hit a new level of depth and importance." "I feel a tremendous sense of solidarity with the people and struggles of Central America that can only be forged through developing relationships and friendships."
Qualifications:
Our artists are people who: * Lead professional-quality arts projects. * Wish to help NGOs educate and empower the people they serve more effectively. * Want to inspire people to participate actively in the NGO's activities. * Help communities lift their own voice--you spark dialog rather than imposing values. Never impose, always guide. * Persistent and creatively overcome challenges. Past ArtCorps artists have achieved this by drawing upon existing skills, keeping an adventurous attitude towards things they have never done before, and having a fierce desire to develop new abilities.

ArtCorps's Mission Statement: ArtCorps advances social change initiatives by promoting arts and culture as powerful tools to generate cooperative and sustainable work between development organizations and the communities they serve.
ArtCorps is a dynamic young organization using the arts to advance social change initiatives in developing countries. Each year, ArtCorps sends volunteer professional artists to work with Central American development organizations with established environmental, public health and human rights programs. During their year placements, the artists introduce the arts as an effective methodology for community empowerment and engagement, educating and inspiring people to participate actively in improving the environmental, health, and social conditions in their communities.
