Description:
These non profits arise in many underprivileged neighborhoods where city and state government assistance is limited. These neighborhood organizations address various basic issues in their poor communities generally related to health care, education, food, clothing, work and safety. They encourage direct participation and organization of citizenship for their self-management of social, cultural, economic and political issues that affect them.
Highlights:
Role of the volunteer: * Support and train young local volunteers in capacity building tasks such as marketing, fund-raising, planning, accounting, management, scouting, etc * Technical assistance: cooperation and assistance in tasks designed to meet the needs of the community such as medical support, wardrobe (clothing), library, legal advice and cooperation in resolving specific community problems. * Establish communication strategies with the different actors of their community and with other community centers. * Develop written and audiovisual communication tools to foster neighbors to join the center and to encourage discussion and solving of various issues relevant to improve their quality of life. * Propose ways of administration and organization of activities to facilitate the work of volunteers who sustain the community center.
Qualifications:
Volunteers should have an intermediate or higher knowledge of Spanish to be able to interact with the project staff. However, language classes can be arranged for those who need/want them. Other than this, it depends on the volunteer specific knowledge and type of activities of interest. Must speak Spanish.
Cost in US$: USD 60 a week
Cost Include Description:
Typical volunteers report spending around USD 60 a week for meals, daily transfers and personal expenses.We can arrange lodging without meals (from USD 70/week) in our well kept residence in a very quiet and safe middle class residential neighborhood which is less than 15 minutes walk to downtown and up to 40 minutes bus ride to the projects.
