Description:
This challenging and CV/Resume boosting placement will give you a rare insight into the day-to-day running of a law practice. You will visit the Ghanaian Courts in Accra and observe how they function. Cases could range from civil and criminal law to conveyance, probate and property law. If you're going to specialize in a particular area of law, the practice will take this into consideration during your placement. Ghanaian law follows common law which is based on the British system. As with all our Work Experience placements, this placement is tailored to suit your specific requirements to ensure you gain the maximum benefit and experience. We'll have detailed discussions with you to ascertain what you're looking for then we'll tailor the programme for you. WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT: --> An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into real Ghanaian culture. --> You'll learn a lot from experts in your field about how they work in a cultural environment that's different to what you're used to. --> New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development. --> An entry on your CV or Resume that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market. --> And best of all ... an unforgettable experience! WHAT OUR USERS SAY: "So far I've have been really impressed with everything, the people are really friendly and have been very well looked after by my host family and everybody else. I've probably been most impressed by the nature of the work I've been doing. I feel like I'm getting much more responsibility than I would be able to get in England, and dealing with human rights work which is very interesting as well. I am getting to prepare proper reports and proposals and not just doing menial tasks, and the trip to Ada was great. I have also been on a trip to the opening of the Ghanaian Parliament and didn't really expect any of this when I came! I get on really well with the other volunteers and we all meet up regularly so I always have plenty to do. We went to Cape Coast and Kakum the other week, which was brilliant." Paul Jones, after his first month on the Law Placement "My placement is going really well: the Law firm where we're working is really friendly, and we've seen some very interesting work. A lot of what we've done has been human rights based - our trip to Ada last week involved helping to train local community leaders as paralegals so that they can recognise human rights abuses when they take place and then advise their people on the best action to take." "We've been working very closely with Nana Oye Lithur, one of the lawyers at [the firm], who is a really impressive person, and very kind. She's made a real effort to involve us in all the work she does, and has even taken us to christenings and funerals so that we get a really full picture of life here!" Caroline Allen

LOCATION: Accra, on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, is both big-city hectic and African laid-back. Accra may not be one of the prettiest cities by Western standards, but there is something else this African city has that makes up for lack of planning and fancy buildings. It is a wonderful city to experience. It is full of character, has a warm feel, is extremely friendly and feels very safe. It also has some great beaches! Spend a few hours in the breezy capital of Accra and you'll swear the wind and waves off the Gulf of Guinea have infused the land and people with equatorial warmth. It is a city that is young, wild and full of soul and here you'll sample the true African spirit. During the day, the streets are full of market stalls and vendors where you can browse and buy mouthwatering foods, colourful Kente cloth, beads, or baskets. Don't forget to practice your haggling. During the night the city comes alive with the traditional Ghanaian 'spot' bars and the sound of live drumming music in the warm night air. Village-specific festivals and events occur throughout the year. "Accra itself is fascinating, very different from home. Very noisy, dusty and hot, but really colourful and vibrant. Particularly impressed by the palm trees, amazing variety of little stalls and shops and the women balancing huge bundles on their heads! We've felt very safe so far - very little hassle from people, most of whom have been really welcoming." Caroline Allen Law Placement Jan 2004 ACCOMMODATION: Your accommodation will vary depending on the type of placement you're doing and where you are located. You may live in comfortable guest house accommodation, but you will most likely live with a host family. This means that you get to eat, sleep, work, socialise and generally live like a Ghanaian. Local family stays enable you to fully experience the local culture from the inside. Many of our volunteers remain friends with their host families long after they leave Ghana and in some cases they return to the country later especially to visit their family. Sometimes members of their Ghanaian family have even gone to visit them in their home country. Food will be local cuisine - again this is to enable you to fully experience living as local Ghanaians do.
