China
Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring, Summer, Throughout the year, Trimester, Winter
Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months, 7-12 months and 1-2 years
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Description:
You'll help the children at this rehabilitation centre to lead a normal life, learn, play, relax. Your work here will be to help the carers with the day to day running of the centre and looking after the children. The staff at the centre are keen for volunteers to get as involved as possible at the centre, and so they will make every effort to train you up to help out as much as your skills allow. The children at the centre are aged 3-16. WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT: --> The satisfaction of getting to know and helping the children at the centre with their daily life, and providing them with a brighter future. --> An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into the Orient and Chinese culture. --> New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development. --> An entry on your CV or resume that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market --> And best of all ... an unforgettable experience! The delightful children at the Centre we work with have more difficulty learning, relaxing and playing than other children - and this is where YOU come in!! This is a truly worthwhile and rewarding project in the vibrant and colourful world of China's big city. Are you looking for a wider perspective? You don't need any qualifications to take part in this project. As with general medical practice in China, the centre uses Chinese massage and acupuncture alongside conventional rehabilitation methods. Your main duties will include: --> Helping the children to eat and look after themselves --> Teaching English to the children --> Helping with the children's personal development and hygiene education --> If you are trained in nursing or medicine, or have any similar qualifications, the staff at the centre may also train you up so that you can help out with the children's treatment plans. The centre is very busy, with a multitude of duties and responsibilities, so you will probably be worked pretty hard in most areas you won't be bored! Your work load and responsibilities will depend on you yourself and your attitude to your work. More work and greater responsibility will become available as you grow in confidence and in skill, and as the staff's confidence in you increases. ACCOMMODATION: You will stay in a modern and friendly, central hostel along with the other volunteers. You'll usually have access to all the modern facilities you'd expect: internet access, a kitchen, TV, common room with DVDs, a security locker and a bar & restaurant on premises. The hostel is located in a lively area, where you will have the chance to meet other backpackers and travellers. There are many shops in the surrounding area if you need to stock up on anything, and the hostel is extremely close to Beijing's famous Sanlitun Lu - or 'Bar Street', where everyone hangs out in the evening for drinks and fun! All food is provided.
