Sri Lanka Teaching English Volunteers

  Sri Lanka
    Polonnaruwa

Length of Position: Minimum of 4 weeks

Description: Volunteers will teach children between six and 19 years old. There are also opportunities to organise extra-curricular activities in the afternoon such as music, drama, arts and sports.

Most of the English teaching Sri Lanka volunteer projects are close to the medieval city of Polonnaruwa. In your spare time you can visit the local archaeological ruins, go jungle trekking, biking, fishing or visit wild life parks. The children will get you involved with local life, and the four weeks will fly by. It is possible to extend your stay if you wish.

The programme is unavailable in April, August and December due to school holidays. In the first term (January to March) the emphasis is more on Sports, and the final term (September to November) is more exam-oriented.

The school day consists of eight periods that are each 35-40 minutes in length. In the afternoon you can put on extra classes for the children. You can organise music, drama, art classes, etc or social and sport activities.

The children you will be teaching will be between the ages of six and 19 years old. The age group that you will be teaching will depend on the needs of the school at the time of your arrival. The classes could have up to 30 or 40 children per class. As a volunteer you will be responsible for helping the teachers in running classes. Teachers will provide hands-on training for your introduction to teaching. Eventually class time will be handed over to you.

Please note: Children are generally not in academic classes during January to March, however volunteers are appreciated for extra help during this period. You will be expected to work under your own initiative and to show an interest to be involved in all activities, particularly sport. Vacation periods take place during April, August and December during which time the project is closed.
