Description: Make a real difference to disadvantaged children in an orphanage. Help the children improve their English and maths skills and therefore improve their future opportunities. The home accommodates orphaned, abandoned or vulnerable girls.

Volunteers can make a tremendous contribution in all departments by looking after the children as well as the elders. By helping the children improve their English and maths skills you can create more opportunities for them and make a positive impact on their lives.

Use your free time to take full advantage of the many attractions on offer. Relax on the beautiful beaches lining the coast just south of Colombo, or take a look around one of the world heritage sites, which include the cave temples of Dambulla, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress or the Royal City of Kandy.

If you prefer something more physical, you have the opportunity to go jungle trekking, mountain biking, bird watching, diving or on an elephant safari, the list is endless!

Highlights: The island of Sri Lanka has had a turbulent history, marked by colonial feuding and a long period of repression for its native people. In recent times, this population has itself turned to internal conflict, with the Tamil minority demanding a separate state and employing terrorist tactics since the 1970s. This civil struggle has finally died down and the country seems to be experiencing a period of calm. This tranquility allows us to notice and appreciate Sri Lanka for what it truly is: a country brimming with fascinating ancient architecture, surrounded on all sides by palm-fringed sandy beaches, and a place where you are never far away from mountainous greenery. Marco Polo once declared that Sri Lanka was one of the best islands on earth.

- The project is based at a girls-only orphanage, so only female volunteers are required at the programme.
