Work with Youth in the Volta Region

  Ghana
    Rural Areas

Durations of Program: 1-2 weeks, 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 1-2 years and over 2 years
Typical Duration of Program: 1-2 weeks
Dates: Year Round

Description: English-speaking volunteers are needed to act as assistant teachers to work in several rural communities in order to keep the schools fully functioning.

Activities include assisting classroom lessons, and engaging in optional after-school activities like playing soccer with local youth.

IVH has partnered with locally run VARA, Volunteers for the Amelioration of
Rural Areas, a non-profit organization located in the Volta region of Ghana.

Amelioration means to "make better", and VARA intends to do just that. Several of their community development projects have been initiated in small
villages surrounding the municipal capital of Ho, in the southern part of the Volta region, and home to the Ewe people. These projects range from promoting access to health care and micro-financing to providing adequate education for primary school-aged children and orphans.

Because the area in which VARA operates is rural, it is having a difficult time finding teachers to engage students in studies such as Math, Science, and English.

Although there are several languages spoken in Ghana, English is the country's official language and school is instructed in English.

Take a week to explore the beauty of West Africa while learning and growing from one of the oldest cultures on our planet. You will be amazed!
