Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Description:
Teaching English & Mathematics in low-income communities can increase employment opportunities and ultimately help people to become economically independent. Both inexperienced and experienced volunteers can teach vocabularies, assist with pronunciation, help with the calculation of arithmetical figures and support students as they practice speaking English or Mathematics and improve on their Mathematics, computer and Science skills. These students, of all ages and backgrounds, appreciate the opportunity to interact with fluent speakers and the extra assistance is welcomed by local teachers. Placements are in primary or secondary schools and special schools. All our placements have one thing in common - a genuine need for conversational English or Mathematics practice. Usually you work in timetabled conversational English or Mathematics lessons. Sometimes (usually at a primary school) you are given your own class. Depending on the town for your placement, you can find yourself teaching a group of five-year-old or a class of adults. If, like many volunteers, you feel a little unsure about taking an English or Mathematics class of any age, we give you a great deal of help. Once you are on your placement you have the full support of your team. Most of our schools welcome volunteers who want to get involved in other aspects of school life, or run extra-curricular activities and after-school clubs such as: Sports Drama Music Assisting Teachers Assisting teachers in schools with limited resources provides an engaging environment for educating children and teenagers. Your ideas, your energy, and your presence are exciting for students and invigorating for the teachers and parents. The students are full of curiosity about the world around them and they welcome your perspective. You are also a positive role model to youth who are often at-risk. You will serve as a teacher's aide in subjects such as science, music, sports, and drama. You may also be involved in creative projects and non-classroom based activities which help create a stimulating learning environment. However, assisting teachers of Special Education offers help to students with mental and physical disabilities that require extra attention and support. Your presence and support helps students build confidence in themselves and gain energy for new accomplishments.
Highlights:
Volunteers are warmly welcomed by teachers who appreciate the exchange of ideas, and an extra pair of hands to work one-on-one with students. Your work may be helping with educational games, sports, teaching life skills, and language and vocational training. Volunteers with experience in Special Education can also bring their skills and initiative to help create lesson plans and activities for the classroom.
Qualifications:
If you are fluent in English or Mathematics you can provide a real contribution to the community and have great fun in the process. You don't have to be a teacher to take part in and enjoy our Teaching placements. Open to all volunteers, you really benefit the students you work with, while gaining valuable skills yourself.
