Help doctors in our Medical Program in Ecuador

  Ecuador
  • Quito:
  • Quito

Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Arrival in Quito every Sunday and Program starts every Monday

Description: Don't become stagnant. Take your medical knowledge or interest in the medical field to Ecuador. Use your skills and have an experience of a life time. Don't be ordinary, be extraordinary!

This program gives you the opportunity to assist at an Ecuadorian physical rehab center, in the north of Quito. Volunteers will be working with a team of multidisciplinary professionals in prostheses and orthoses laboratory, physiotherapy and physical program, and language and occupational therapy. Volunteers do not need to have experience in the medical field to be part of this program. All participants will work alongside of a supervisor who will be guiding them through the daily activities.

This outpatient rehab center was founded in 1984. It is an independent, non-governmental, non profit organization dedicated to assisting and supporting the development of individuals with disabilities of all ages, providing social and medical services in its Integral Assistance Center for People with disabilities.

Help doctors in our Medical Program in Ecuador

Highlights: Volunteer Role: The role of the volunteer is based on his/her medical experience. Specialists will work with local doctors and less experienced volunteers will provide assistance under supervision of staff in different procedures (no experience is necessary). Some of the activities in which the volunteer will be involved are:
* Assist doctors in the rehabilitation area
* Help with language therapy
* Support doctors with the completion of patient's forms
* Work in the prostheses laboratory
* Taking part in any special project assigned by the doctors

Location: The project is located in the capital of Ecuador, Quito. The project is in an urban area in a residential neighborhood in the north side of the city.

Accommodations and Meals: Volunteers will stay at a host family. Host families are located in good residential neighborhoods in Quito. Home stays have been selected after an application process to make sure they have everything participants need. Breakfast and dinner are included in the host family's homes.

In your free time you can enjoy the following activities:

* Enjoy the Old Town-churches, government, squares and shopping. The historic old town of Colonial Quito is the jewel in Ecuador's crown. The city was designated the first UNESCO World Heritage City in 1978 in recognition of the importance of its colonial architecture (ahead of cities like Bath and Venice). Quito is the city that has the best-preserved, least altered historic centre in Latin America. The monasteries of San Francisco and Santo Domingo, and the Church and Jesuit College of La Compañía, with their rich interiors, are pure examples of the 'Baroque school of Quito', which is a fusion of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish and indigenous art.

* Visit the "Middle of the World City" where the monument that divides the Northern Hemisphere from the Southern is located. It was built during the XVII century when a French Expedition defined the precise location of the equatorial line. The Ethnographic Museum can also be visited.

* You can't miss the Teleferico, this is a cable car that takes passengers up the flanks of Pichincha Volcano to the top of Cruz Loma. The view form here is spectacular.
