Experience Healthcare in the Developing World

  Ghana
    Takoradi
  India
    Trivandrum
  Tanzania
    Arusha,  Zanzibar

Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks, 5-8 weeks and 9-12 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks

Description: Elective placements are organised on an individual basis and structured according to each students' objectives. Our programmes are structured to offer a complete experience, giving the opportunity to work and travel off the beaten track and also become part of a community of like-minded people by living in one of our Work the World houses.

We work both in large regional hospitals and smaller district clinics, as well as with other healthcare initiatives such as AIDS/HIV education programmes. If you can let us know your areas of interest our strong links in the medical communities ensure that we can accommodate almost any specific preferences you might have.

Highlights: The Ghana programme offers a real insight into how traditional attitudes and economic limitations impact on healthcare in the developing world. There are various opportunities to gain clinical experience in regional hospitals, smaller district hospitals/clinics or on outreach initiatives such as HIV/Aids or Dentistry

Tanzania has been a fantastic success and the people we have had join us there have had excellent experiences. We have firm arrangements with a number of hospitals and clinics in and around Arusha in the North and Mwanza on the cost of Lake Victoria. The hospitals that we work with range from the main referral centres in the area, through to smaller regional hospitals and clinics which cover the full range of medical services.

In Zanzibar, we are partnered with Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, the only referral hospital on the island. The hospital also acts as a primary healthcare centre for much of the local population, so you can be sure to see a wide variety of cases at all levels. We have opportunities for placements in most major fields of medicine and surgery, as well as nursing, dentistry and physiotherapy.

The projects in India are slightly more diverse than in Africa as we do not work with specific hospitals, but have a formal agreement with the Kerala State Government. Because of this, placement opportunities are effectively endless.   It is possible to undertake your elective in large busy general hospitals, smaller semi-rural district hospitals or small specialised clinics.

Qualifications:
We arrange electives and placements for students and newly qualified professionals from various healthcare disciplines in Ghana, India, Tanzania and Zanzibar. Students will need to have completed at least one year of their healthcare degree. Each placement is structured on an individual basis and our programs are constantly developing.

Work the World's Mission Statement: Work the World is a British company that exclusively organises placements for student medics, nurses, dentists and physiotherapists to gain experience working in Africa and Asia. Although we focus in particular on electives, placements are available to students at any stage of their course and to those wanting to broaden their experience after graduation. By focussing on healthcare placements, we provide high quality programmes that are designed specifically to meet the needs of our customers. We also enjoy strong partnerships with a large number of hospitals, clinics, government authorities and NGOs overseas, giving us the freedom to organise placements quickly and efficiently. Our programmes are also about the social experience, travelling off the beaten track, getting involved in community work and perhaps most importantly having fun!'
