Teach English to Underpriviledged Children

  Ecuador
  • Quito:
  • Quito

Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks, 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 9-12 weeks
Dates: Year round

Description: La Dolorosa Shelter near Quito is a non-profit organization that provides education and a home for children whose families are unable to care for them. The shelter caters to children between the ages of 5 and 17. Volunteers teach English to the children, help them with their homework, and organize recreational activities.

Highlights: Most volunteers will live with an Ecuadorian host family throughout their stay - an excellent way to learn about Ecuadorian life and to practice the language. VIP Ecuador's host families have a reputation for being warm and fun-loving, making it easy for you to feel right at home. Our Homestay Coordinator, carefully selects our host families and is in touch with both you and the family during your stay. Your family will welcome you upon arrival and treat you as a family member.

Qualifications: Many charitable institutions in Ecuador work towards providing an education for the poorest in society who would not otherwise go to school. Knowledge of English provides a major advantage in terms of future opportunities, and this is an area where volunteers can be of great service. Native speakers of English, or those with conversational fluency, are wanted for this project. Anyone 18 or older may apply, except US citizens who must be 19. Skilled and unskilled volunteers are welcome. You must be healthy and fit enough to adapt to living and working where conditions may be strenuous and where accommodations are basic.
