Volunteer Program in Asia/Nepal/Pokhara

Highlights: Location Description

The School is located at the heart of Pokhara. Pokhara is a vibrant city of Nepal with places of great tourist attractions like Lakeside Sarangkot, etc. Pokhara has a wide range of restaurants, internet cafés, clubs, shopping centers, and banks. The volunteers also have numerous opportunities to explore the sites under cultural heritage during free time. Our volunteers can simply hike in nearby villages, ride bikes in Pokhara, walk around the tourist city of lakeside, the options are unlimited. Project also offers unlimited opportunities to witness and participate in traditional rituals.

Nepal is the country where the apostle of peace Lord Buddha was born. Buddha spread the message of Buddhism all across the world. Tibet is also a Buddhist country and there are more than 130,000 Tibetans who live in exile and out of that, over 20% of them are living in Nepal. Despite all difficulties, these exiled Buddhists are practicing their religion and rebuilding their cultural heritage in their own little ways. In this mission of the Tibetans in Nepal, education of the children is the top most priority and command of English is very important.

The Tibetan children are very keen to learn and improve their conversational English to brighten their future and also to be able to translate and preserve the holy Buddhist scriptures. Primary education schools in the Tibetan Children's Village were established by the Tibetan community in Nepal. These schools support religious practices in their studies and provide schooling in Buddhist philosophies as well as a variety of other areas such as English and computer skills.

The schools in Tibetan Children's Village are resource-poor, and under staffed. These schools also need teachers who can teach good English to the students. Apart from teaching English, volunteers can also teach extra curricular activities like sports, drawing, music, etc. to develop the perceiving power of the children and also help in administrative work.

Qualifications: There is no need for specific qualifications for the 'teaching English' projects in Nepal. However, volunteers interested to teach the children must have a good command of English.
