Description:
The Academy is a registered non-profit organization and school that specializes in educating the disabled, gifted and dual-exceptional, for ages 8-18, in Kingston, Jamaica. The cost of special education is beyond the means of the average Jamaican and most disabled children are forced to stay home because there are no suitable state run facilities. The Academy educates disenfranchised students free of cost, by sponsorship and volunteer services. The Academy will assist the volunteer, on arrival with travel from the airport, with arranging living accommodation and transportation, etc. There are many options: * Teacher of French and Spanish (with Special Education) * Teacher of Math and Sciences(with Special Education) * Teacher of History, Social Studies and Business (with Special Education) * Teacher of English and Religious Education (with Special Education) * Teacher of Special Activities: Art, Music, Drama and Sports * Special Education Teacher of Math and English * Elementary School Teacher (with Special Education) * Classroom Shadow * School Nurse * Administrative Assistant (with Special Education) = experience and/or training is an asset.
Qualifications:
The initial period of commitment is December 1, 2009 to July 15, 2010 and can be extended by mutual agreement. Volunteers need to be fully sponsored and need to hold at least one degree. Training and/or Experience in Special Education are desirable.
