Language Assistant in Malaysia

  Malaysia
    Kota Kinabalu,  Kuching

Duration of Program: 3-6 months
Dates: Inquire for dates

Description: projects will require volunteers to work as assistants in primary or secondary schools teaching English as the official second language, and helping with associated extracurricular activities like debating, art, music, sport, and drama. The placements in secondary schools are of two different types. We have placements in normal Malaysia secondary schools, and also in schools run by 'MARA', which is within the Ministry of Entrepreneurship.

The schools are mostly for ethnic Malays and are predominantly Islamic. All Malaysians place a special importance on dress codes, manners, and customs so these must be observed by all volunteers. Smoking and drinking alcohol is not allowed in schools and institutions, and any use of drugs is forbidden and punishable by law. All the usual strong personal qualities are required in abundance, particularly initiative, tact and maturity.

Hours of work vary but expect up to 8 hours a day with occasional duties during weekends. In most projects, no pocket money can be provided; in others, a small allowance covers some basic expenses like postage stamps, or fruit from the local market.

Language Assistant in Malaysia

Highlights: Malaysia is emerging as one of the most vibrant Asian countries with superb scenery and a rich culture. English is the official second language and a great emphasis is placed on learning it. Volunteers work alongside local teachers to provide an avenue for their students to practice speaking the language with a native speaker.

Malaysia has a hot, tropical climate where day time temperatures can reach around 35°C. The climate in the coastal areas is very much influenced by the monsoon season from November until March. The western side of Peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia) is not affected by these monsoons because it is protected by the soaring mountain ranges.

Qualifications: These projects offer the perfect balance. By day you'll come up with original ways to encourage your students to practice speaking English, while at night you will experience the real Malaysia as your host community takes you under their wing. These projects will suit strong communicators who are keen to take on an assisting role in the classroom.

Volunteers, especially females, must be prepared for some restrictions on their own freedom; these are part of the culture of Malaysia where attitudes to 18 and 19 years old are different from those in the West.
