South Africa Nature Surveillance

Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Starts on the first Monday of each month

Description: Spend your time photographing the wildlife within this impressive setting, including elephants, rhinos and if you are lucky maybe even leopards. A further role for volunteers on the programme will be to help educate and raise awareness in the local community about wildlife and the importance of conservation.

The project fee entails financing that goes directly back into the project that you are involved with. It facilitates funding for items such as educational materials.
Transport between Richard's Bay Airport and St. Lucia
Orientation programme, including a photography course by an experienced wildlife photographer
All daily transfers to and from your projects during your stay
All accommodation and meals throughout programme, which includes three meals a day at the volunteer house
Laundry service during your stay
24 hour support number and contact for emergencies

What's Not Included in the Programme

Personal travel insurance for the duration of your placement
All transport by air or bus to Richard's Bay Airport
Personal Photographic equipment
All items of a personal nature, such as curios, gifts, clothing (work and other)
E-mail/Internet and telephone calls
Soft drinks, wines and spirits
All visas for border crossings
Any excursions over and above your planned itinerary in St. Lucia

Degree Level: Bachelors Degree (Undergraduate)

Qualifications: As a volunteer, your help will be essential in creating a complete database of wildlife photographs. You will be required to take pictures of as many wildlife species as possible. This will vary from taking photos of large animals such as rhino, buffalo, elephant and leopard, as well as the smaller creatures such as insects and chameleons. There are over five hundred and twenty bird species that will also need to be included in the database so it will also be your task to photograph these.

The best pictures that are taken by the volunteers will be included in the database and you will receive assistance in getting some of the best pictures published in magazines and/or books.

Conservation Education
As a volunteer, you will be visiting local schools and community centres where you will give classes and workshops. The subject of these will include the reason for and methods of conservation as well as education on local wildlife.
