Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks

Description:
Through your passion for sport you will be able to help the disadvantaged people of Kimilili, Western Kenya. Primarily working as a sports coach, you will teach the sport you are most interested or experienced in. This includes popular sports like football, rugby and cricket for the boys and netball, volleyball and badminton for the girls. In the mornings, you will help to teach classes in your school, mainly English and IT; however, if you have teaching experience you can make an even greater impact and get involved with teaching in a number of other areas. You will shadow the local teachers for a number of lessons and mainly work as a teaching assistant. However, in some cases you may be required to run the whole class and even formulate your own lesson plans! The schoolteachers will give you all the assistance you need to do this and help you with teaching techniques and class standards. You will be placed in one of the 6 main schools in the Kimilili area, all depending on what sport(s) you wish to coach. Different schools have differing sporting needs, so your interests and skills will be matched to the school you are most suitable for. In Kenya, sports classes are done separately according to sex, with females only allowed to be taught by a female teacher and males only allowed to be taught by a male teacher. Your placement will obviously follow this pattern. This programme gives you the chance to immerse yourself in a rural Kenyan community. Through academic subject teaching and sports coaching you will be providing much needed assistance to those who really need your help. This project is sure to provide lots of lasting memories, both to you and the children you help!
