Description:
This position provides a wonderful opportunity to assist the community, from children to adults, in discovering why, how and where to change existing environmental conditions for the better. Involvement might include low-key presentations at neighborhoods and schools, as well as helping implement province-wide initiatives. Language skills in Spanish is essential (intermediate level is required) and it might include presentations in classrooms and for community groups. Skills is establishing baseline knowledge and skills among community members (schools, organizations, neighborhoods, etc.) is desired as our community lacks any substantive and consistent efforts in protecting the environment. When everything is done we want people to be able to think better about protecting the environment, to have baseline knowledge of what the environment is about and to possess basic skills for taking individual, group, neighborhood and political action.
Highlights:
Las Terrenas is one of the most beautiful areas of the country, with close to 20 miles of wonderful beaches, lush forests and almost a wild-west feeling to it. Volunteers have great opportunities to act independently, be self-managed entities pursuing the best ways to impact the community for good. Volunteers work individually or in groups, with other foreign volunteers and/or with local volunteers. Teaching how to protect the environment in a fun and creative way is a challenge but also the highlight of this position.
Qualifications:
The desirable candidate would have experience in environmental education and activities, particularly related to baseline knowledge and skill building. Intermediate language level in Spanish is required. Volunteers with experience in small organizations, in community development and/or those willing to learn and to take risks will do best in a community with basically no previous environmental protection work.
