Community, Conservation Care and Schools (Boarding) Projects in Germany

Highlights: Community Care projects can be in schools for disabled children, or schools catering to special educational needs. In special schools volunteers may give practical support to individual students or work with staff in family groups. There are projects in kindergartens (attending to early learning as well as social development) and Kinderheime, a supportive environment to which children with difficult backgrounds return after morning school. There are also Community and Care opportunities in residential homes for the elderly.

Conservation projects are with Freiwilliges Oekologisches Jahr, a renowned program that carries out work on farms or in locations of special environmental significance, or Denkmalpflege, which deals with the preservation of historic buildings and monuments.

Schools (Boarding) projects are in secondary schools, which usually have both boarding and day pupils. Volunteers assist primarily with supervision in the boarding house and with free time activities, but there will also be opportunities to help in the classroom, with English or subjects where volunteers may have a particular skill, e.g. music, sport, or computing.

Qualifications: Cultural differences and dependence on a second language will require resilience and determination on the part of the volunteer
