Durations of Program: 3-6 months and 7-12 months
Typical Duration of Program: 7-12 months
Dates: February, August & September
Description:
We currently offer two different types of placement in New Zealand: - schools - conservation * Schools (7 or 12 months) The majority of school placements are in boarding schools, however there are a few day schools. A boarding school is more like a small community which functions on a 24 hour basis, 7 days a week so expect to be working some early mornings and evenings. Some of the duties you might become involved in are helping in the boarding house, assisting teachers in the classroom, before/after school care, helping with sports and extra curricular activities. New Zealand schools have a great tradition in sport and are always looking for keen sports players, but many are also justly proud of their music and drama so help with these is always required. Equally, outdoor pursuits are an important part of the programme and in these placements; the Duke of Edinburgh Awards will be an advantage. *Conservation (5 months) Our conservation placements in New Zealand are now combined with volunteering in Australia too. We offer 6 weeks in NZ and then 12 weeks in Australia - so you get to see two great countries! Volunteers get involved in protecting the natural environment through planting trees, clearing scrubland, restoring habitats for endangered species, flora/fauna surveys, maintaining walking tracks, or coastal stabilization programmes. Lattitude works in partnership with New Zealands' leading conservation volunteer organization, Conservation Volunteers, and all work is carried out under the supervision of qualified Team Leaders. Conservation placements suit volunteers who are reasonably fit, enjoy being a member of a team, and who have a passion for the outdoors. New Zealand is famous for its natural beauty, and as an Environmental volunteer you'll be able to contribute to the New Zealand environment in a very practical way. No matter what tasks you're given, you know that what you're doing will have long-term benefits.
Highlights:
New Zealand is an independent member of the British Commonwealth. It is a country of great natural beauty - mountains, rivers, lakes, forest and beaches. Travel around is affordable and easy. New Zealand has built a renowned reputation as an unspoilt wilderness - the country's social emphasis on ecology and a resolute anti-nuclear stance can now be seen to have led the way. New Zealanders are fanatical about sport, especially rugby.
Qualifications:
* For Schools: - Enjoys working with young people, - Interest in future career in teaching and education, skills in sport, music, art, drama. - A willingness to get involved in all facets of school life, - Has an understanding of taking a position that requires responsibility, maturity and professionalism. - Some schools may need volunteers to drive so a current driving license is an advantage. * For Conservation: - A love of the outdoors and in protecting the natural environment, - a positive attitude, adaptable and able to work as part of a team. - Volunteers must have a reasonable level of fitness and be prepared for fairly labor intensive work in sometimes very remote locations.
