Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks and 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Please Contact Us for more information.

Description: This special program gives participants an inside view of New Zealand's indigenous culture and natural environment. The program consists of a course in Maori cultural traditions followed by a volunteer conservation project that allows participants to experience some of the most spectacular wilderness areas in New Zealand while working to help protect them. Volunteers enjoy the unique privilege of seeing remote parts of New Zealand that are generally not open to the public.

Maori Culture Course
The modern Maori are descendents of Polynesian immigrants who, it is believed, came to New Zealand in canoes between the 9th and 13th centuries. Today the Maori account for about 10% of the population and the influence of their fascinating culture is still evident throughout modern New Zealand. This two week course, offered through Wellington College, introduces participants to Maori history, native language, and unique cultural traditions such as wood carving, weaving, traditional Haka war dances and hangi, the traditional method of cooking meat and vegetables in underground ovens. The classes are non-academic and center around activities and field trips. Participants spend one night during the program in a marae, a traditional Maori community center and meeting place, often decorated with elaborate carvings.

Volunteer Project*
Projects can be arranged for any duration starting with a minimum of one week. The work typically involves manual labor. Participants should be in good physical condition and come prepared to spend large amounts of time outside in remote areas. Outdoor clothing and sturdy work shoes are recommended.

Project Areas
- Forest conservation
- Wildlife conservation

* All volunteer projects are registered with the New Zealand Department of Conservation.
