Troubled Girls Center in Kenya
Kenya
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks and 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Year round (arriving Mid-month and end of the month)
Description:
Mugima Girls Center is a home mainly for Maasai girls who are escaping abusive situations or early forced marriages. The Center aims to encourage self-development and to promote the rights of girls, women, and youth. The young girls that come to the Mugima Center are educated on basic health and hygiene practices and are economically empowered through various skill training sessions. Serving around sixty girls, the Center is always busy and in need of motivated volunteers. Volunteers are needed to help teach English and computers to the girls, work in one-on-one or in small groups organizing guidance and counseling activities, lead recreational activities, and promote HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns throughout the community. We encourage volunteers to get creative when working with the young girls and to bring some of your own ideas to share! As a volunteer, the girls will look up to you, thankful that you are taking part in their lives and learning about their culture.
Highlights:
The Mugima Girls Center is located about 20 miles outside of Nairobi in the Ngong Division of the Kajido district. All volunteers will be met at the Nairobi airport upon arrival and taken to their host community. Accommodations during the project are on site at the guest house with other volunteers. Participants will have their own room with a comfortable bed and necessary amenities. All meals will be provided or cooked together at the guest house. While Kenya is in better shape economically than many of its less fortunate neighbors in East Africa, lack of adequate healthcare is a serious problem in some areas, and much of the population lives in abject poverty. Sixty percent of Kenyans live on less than USD1 per day. As a volunteer in Kenya you will have the opportunity to use your unique talents and skills to assist Kenyans who are working to build a better future for themselves and their country.
