Nyanchwa Hospital
Kenya
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks and 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Year round (arriving Mid-month and end of the month)
Description:
The Nyanchwa Hospital is located in a town of about 200,000 people that is characterized by rolling hills and scenic mountains. Despite its natural beauty, HIV/AIDS is all too common, especially among the young population. Medical care in Kenya is quite expensive and the majority of the population cannot afford any extra care to help treat or prevent the spread of this horrific disease. The hospital has been established in order to provide those suffering the basic assistance they need in order to live a longer and healthier life. At the hospital, volunteers will be charged with making daily rounds visiting patients, taking vital signs, administering medicines and helping with HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns in the community. There are typically around 50 patients at any given time in the hospital that the volunteer will be working with.
Highlights:
Nyanchwa Hospital is located about 150 miles west of Nairobi in Kisii. All volunteers will be met at the Nairobi airport upon arrival and taken to their host community. Accommodations will be with local Kisii host families and all meals are included. While Kenya is in better shape economically than many of its less fortunate neighbors in East Africa, lack of adequate health care is a serious problem in some areas, and much of the population lives in abject poverty. Sixty percent of Kenyans live on less than $1 per day. As a volunteer in Kenya you will have the opportunity to use your unique talents and skills to assist Kenyans who are working to build a better future for themselves and their country.
