Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks and 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: Year round (arriving Mid-month and end of the month)

Description: Jogoo Orphanage is a home and rehabilitation center for children who have lived in slums and may have been abandoned by their parents due to disease and extreme poverty. The orphanage was started in 1997 by a group of local Kisii women who witnessed the desperate situation and began helping to care for and feed many of the children. It also aims to support the mothers, hoping to prevent future abandonment of their children. Although the orphanage struggles with staff and financial resources, it continues to be a model of community service addressing the plight of abandoned and orphaned children in Kisii.

Volunteers at the orphanage will be working very closely with its 85 children and teenagers as mentors, career counselors, group activity leaders, and tutors. Your involvement with the children will aid in their development, providing guidance and support.

Kenyan Orphanage

Highlights: The orphanage is located about 150 miles west of Nairobi. All volunteers will be met at the Nairobi airport upon arrival and taken to their host community.

Accommodations will be with local Kisii host families and all meals are included.

While Kenya is in better shape economically than many of its less fortunate neighbors in East Africa, lack of adequate health care is a serious problem in some areas, and much of the population lives in abject poverty. Sixty percent of Kenyans live on less than $1 per day.

As a volunteer in Kenya you will have the opportunity to use your unique talents and skills to assist Kenyans who are working to build a better future for themselves and their country.

Qualifications: When applying for Greenheart Travel's Volunteer Abroad Program, you should be in good mental and physical health. In addition you must be at least 18 years of age. The orphanage is located about 150 miles west of Nairobi. All volunteers will be met at the Nairobi airport upon arrival and taken to their host community.
