Training and Rehabilitation Center for Disabled in Ashanti, Ghana
Ghana
Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Year round
Description:
Serving only twelve patients when the center opened its doors in 1988, it now attends to over 200 people who suffer from a variety of physical and mental disabilities. The center finds it difficult to care for all patients with such a small staff. Funding is low and many extra hands are needed. Currently the center relies on philanthropic donations to survive but they are working towards self-sustainability through some micro-credit initiatives. Volunteers will be working closely with the center's staff attending to disabled patients and community members. Duties include physical therapy, social work and counseling, and general nursing. The center is hoping to build a few classrooms in the near future in order to increase formal education in the community so volunteers may find themselves joining in their efforts to do so
Highlights:
The Rehabilitation Center is located in the district of Offinso in the central region of Ashanti.
