School for Mentally Handicapped in Ghana
Ghana
Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Year round
Description:
Serving 150 mentally handicapped children between the ages of 8-20 years old, the school is fully dedicated to providing education to these kids who would otherwise struggle in the larger public school. Receiving greater personal attention and having the teachers focused on their special needs, the students are able to learn and excel. They are also taught basic life skills and how to socialize with the greater community. Although challenging at times, it is a very rewarding experience for the 22 staff members and international volunteers. Volunteers are asked to help teach small groups of students English and math, organize skills workshops, play games with the students, and help each one of them to gain self-confidence. Volunteers are also encouraged to be creative and prepare some of their own workshops or lessons to share with the youngsters.
Highlights:
The project is located in the small town of Asokore Mampong near the large city of Kumasi. Volunteers will receive a thorough orientation for a few days in the capital city of Accra upon arrival in Ghana. Volunteers will stay with carefully screened host families for the duration of the program. All meals with your host family are included in your stay.
