Description:
Our volunteer Medicine & Healthcare internship programs in Cameroon are based in Buea, Kumba, limbe, Muyuka, Tiko. You will be based in a Community Hospital working with cildren and patients who have a wide range of illnesses. In the semi-rural region of the South West Province, the hospital are smaller, but still has a range of different departments where volunteers can work. Small village clinics in Cameroon often lack even basic healthcare facilities, so you will be attending to patients from a huge area, who have often traveled many miles to reach a hospital with the facilities they need. The hospitals/Clinics where we work provide Basic for learning and improving your medicine and healthcare skills. You will find yourself coming into contact with conditions that you wouldn't normally see in North America and Europe, such as malaria and typhoid, on an almost daily basis. Upon your arrival at the hospital you will discuss your work schedule with your Projects Abroad coordinator and the placement supervisor, who will be a member of the hospital staff. Most volunteers choose to spend time in a variety of different departments within the hospital including accident and emergency, pediatrics, maternity, pharmacy, physical therapy and surgery. Students, RN, LPN who are currently enrolled in medical school and wish to do your elective in Cameroon, you will have a choice of a large hospital in a city, or working in a more rural setting. You will meet one of our supervisors who speak English/French and are very experienced at working with western medical and healthcare students. They will be eager to test out your medical knowledge, as well as give out to you the benefit of their training and experience. Outside of the hospital you will live with local host-families. There is plenty to do in whichever region of Cameroon you are located and, as one of our most popular destinations, there will always be a large Projects Abroad volunteer community available to join you.
Highlights:
The project is located in the South West Region of Cameroon. Volunteers will receive a thorough orientation for a few days upon their arrival in Cameroon. Volunteers will stay with carefully screened host families for the duration of the program. All meals with your host family are included in your stay. Generally. a volunteer is at work by 8:00 and works till 4:00pm. You may join friends for some drink or prepare for the next day's work On weekends, you may decide to visit places on interest around the Region, think you may want to leave on Fridays and return on Sundays if it requires that you sleep over. It is such a wonderful experience to be in Africa. Do not miss that, you can come for even only two weeks so make time for this memorable, breath taking and life changing experience.
