Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Year round
Description:
Over 50 years ago, one woman was given the task of taking care of a sickly baby after the mother lost her life in childbirth. There is a high mortality rate for babies separated from their mothers given mal-nutrition and disease. After this experience, she was moved to open a home and school to serve other orphaned babies and young children. Currently, the home serves around 70 children ages one day through 8 years. Through community funding and their chicken farm, the home is able to feed residents and generate a small amount of income to sustain itself. They are hoping to start more micro-credit projects to become even more self-sufficient. Volunteers are expected to help take care of babies by feeding, bathing, and clothing them each day, making sure those that are of age attend pre-school, help sick children receive medical attention at the hospital, and to attend to other general care of infants.
Highlights:
The home is located in Mampong near Kumasi. Volunteers will receive a thorough orientation for a few days in the capital city of Accra upon arrival in Ghana.
