Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Year round
Description:
Volunteers are needed to help in a variety of ways from playing with the children, organizing fun recreational activities, leading skills workshops, feeding them, teaching basic oral and written English, math, and drawing, and any other daily duties. Most importantly, volunteers are asked to provide care, encouragement, and support to each student as a positive mentor. This community school was established in 2000 with only 15 children who were very poor and needy with the hopes of providing these children a place to learn instead of begging for food and money on the streets from tourists passing by. Now the school has over 300 children ages 1-13 years old. They do not require uniforms and all children are fed each day. One of the toughest issues the school faces is that of space. As they continue to serve more children, they are confronted with the need to build more spaces eliminating the make-shift classrooms that have sprouted up outside under trees.
